CMAG's Ad of the Week for 4/9/08

Sponsored by the McConnell Senate Committee ‘08, this week’s Ad of The Week details the trials and tribulations of current and former nuclear power plant employees, who experienced first hand the dangerous side effects of prolonged exposure to radiation. The one-minute ad chronicles McConnell’s work on the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant.

In his pursuit of a Kentucky United States Senate seat, incumbent Mitch McConnell released a commercial that tears at the heart strings of viewers through the use of sickened nuclear power plant workers, such as a man who is nearly completely mute explaining how he owes his life to Senator McConnell. The ad refers to the nuclear plant workers as “patriots” because of their help in making nuclear power a necessary source of fuel throughout the Cold War. The commercial explains McConnell’s successful work for “cancer screening programs and compensation for sick workers” as major accomplishments. One worker explains this in the words, “These programs would not be here at all if it were not for Senator McConnell.”

“We found out along the way that it was more dangerous than we were made aware of,” one employee says about radiation exposure in McConnell’s ad. “He’s been the champion, he’s held hearings, he’s kicked open doors, he’s appropriated funds, he’s delivered the goods for these workers.” The ad concludes with a worker explaining, “The guy cares for the working man.”
